Truck Duck by Michael Rex

The highlight of Truck Duck, a quirky rhyming book, is seeing the crazy illustrations that result from the juxtaposition of the rhyming words, like the duck in the truck (Truck Duck) and my favourite: a crabby-looking crab in the cab (Cab Crab).

Set in 19th-century London, this gorgeous tale by @auxierjonathan swept me off my feet with its enchanting combination of historical fiction and magical realism. . The cold and bleak Dickensian setting and well-researched portrayal of the lives of chimney sweeps are gut-wrenching to read about, but the life-affirming thread of love and sacrifice that runs through the story will warm the cockles of your heart. It’s #WorldKindnessDay today and if you’re looking for a great #picturebook that introduces and explores different simple ways to “Be Kind” for preschoolers, look no further than this aptly named gem by Pat Zietlow Miller and @jenhillstudio that even grownups can learn a few things from. | Coincidentally our current read-aloud chapter book is #Wonder which I first read three years back. (Apparently my kids’ interest was piqued when their teachers separately showed them the movie trailer in school, so this is the first time they — not I — have chosen the chapter book to be read aloud.) We’re about halfway into the book and if it were up to my kids, we’d keep reading nonstop because they just can’t get enough of the story, which is by turns heartbreaking, funny and heartwarming, and a poignant reminder to “choose kind”. The icing on the cake, of course, is a family movie night after we finish the book, when we’ll all be watching the movie for the first time — can’t wait! p.s. It’s amazing how easily and completely children are able to immerse themselves in a world of their own conjuring, no matter how limited the space or how simple the materials they have at hand. So it was no surprise that when we read this cute #picturebook, my kids immediately saw themselves in the story — it’s almost uncanny how @kathyellendavis and @kaylanijuanita have captured the raw ingenuity and dynamics of their imaginative play both together and apart, and we loved poring over the little details in the illustrations that add so much more to the story.
