Mouse Count by Ellen Stoll Walsh

Mouse Count is a story that centres around a hungry snake who finds 10 sleepy mice and proceeds to put them one by one in a tall glass jar, counting them as he does.

When the mice wake up, they come up with a plan to send the greedy snake on a wild-goose chase while they work together to free themselves. As they escape, they uncount themselves: 10, 9, 8… etc. A clever story with a subtle moral that is simple enough for toddlers to understand.
