Look! A Book! is the book to get for little (and *ahem* not-so-little) fans of the I-spy/search-and-find genre of books. Unlike the granddaddy of such books, Where’s Wally? (or Where’s Waldo?, as he’s known in the US), however, which requires you to look for that same slippery candy-striped fella on every page, this book features a host of deliciously wacky two-page-spread cartoon scenes, each with different things to find.
The illustrations are chock-full of hilarious and witty little details (a baby whale in a fishbowl! a square balloon!) that deserve to be pored over even if they aren’t the things you’re asked to find — in fact, that’s the whole idea: to encourage readers to notice the little things. The author even uses strategic portholes on the pages following each scene to point out some of these random details — just in case you’ve missed them, and you really shouldn’t.
As if all that weren’t enough, the fun text even rhymes throughout! This book was still slightly advanced for my son, however, because of the nature of the illustrations and the minute size of the items to be found, but I think anyone above four years old will enjoy this challenging and entertaining book — I know I did!
