Sparkle and Spin by Paul and Ann Rand

If you love reading, you must love words to a certain extent. And if so, you must read Sparkle and Spin, which is a delightful celebration of words: the different types and uses of words, and how they relate to sound and expression.

The inventive and playful illustrations by the graphic-designer extraordinaire Paul Rand perfectly bring out the thoughtful and well-expressed text by his wife, Ann, and are reason enough to get this 1957 classic that will stand its own against the most creative books — children’s or otherwise — today.

This is one of those books that you can read to children — as a fun introduction to words and creative graphics — but it’ll probably be most appreciated by lovers of words and good design, of any age. In other words, it’s one of those “children’s books” that parents really buy for themselves.
