The Golden Egg Book by Margaret Wise Brown and Leonard Weisgard

Part of the Big Little Golden Book series of classic children’s books, The Golden Egg Book is a cute story about a curious little bunny who finds an egg and tries various ways to figure out what’s inside — by shaking it, prodding it, jumping on it and even throwing little nuts at it — all to no avail.

Just when the bunny gives up and falls asleep, however, the egg cracks open… and out pops a curious little animal who’s puzzled by the “little fur thing” — AKA the bunny — lying beside him and hilariously attempts to figure it out using the same unsuccessful methods tried by the bunny.

Ultimately, though, this is a sweet tale about how, sometimes, the best friendships can be struck under the most unusual circumstances, and the endearingly old-fashioned illustrations are a nice warm-and-fuzzy touch.
