As the title suggests, Mama Built a Little Nest is a non-fiction picture book that highlights an amazing variety of nests built by different birds (and even one sweet example that isn’t really a nest, but functions as one just the same).
Each spread focuses on one species of bird, with a four-line rhyming verse that is a pleasure to read out loud and which manages to capture the essence of the nest featured. For older readers, there’s even a small box of text at the side with a more factual description. Steve Jenkin’s beautiful cut- and torn-paper collage artwork are laid on a white background, so the pages are clean and soothing to the eye.
The key marker of a great non-fiction picture book such as this, however, is that, ultimately, it leaves readers awed not simply because of the artwork or prose, but by the amazing diversity in nature.
