Not Very Scary by Carol Brendler and Greg Pizzoli

In Not Very Scary Melly the monster is walking to her cousin’s house on “the scariest night of all” for a mysterious surprise, when she realises that some pretty un-scary creatures — or at least that’s what she tries to tell herself — seem to be trailing behind her…

The cumulative way in which Melly encounters the usual Halloween suspects — a coal-black cat, two skittery skeletons, three wheezy witches, etc. — adds suspense as more and more of them appear around her, and makes for a fun and alliterative counting activity on the side.

Of course, as the title promises, the cartoony illustrations are more kooky than spooky, and the surprising ending proves that supposedly creepy creatures can be friendly too — i.e. not very scary at all!
