The Deep Dark Wood by Algy Craig Hall and Ali Pye

A little girl treks through the titular Deep Dark Wood to visit her best friend, and encounters a wolf, a witch, a troll and a giant along the way. But what actually takes place isn’t quite what you’d expect from these usual suspects…

The deep dark wood, the innocent child and the big bad wolf have all become rather clichéd in the realm of kidlit and fairy tales, so it’s nice to see a picture book take on all these tired stereotypes and turn them on their heads to tell a refreshingly entertaining story with a creative twist that will make you retract your own assumptions.

A fun read for spunky kids — in particular, sweet (and spicy) little girls — who aren’t afraid of the dark or the big bad wolf, this book was a big hit with my daughter!
