The Very Lonely Firefly centres on the eponymous protagonist’s search for the other fireflies, and along the way introduces various common light sources.
And, as you’d expect from Eric Carle, the paper-collage illustrations and text in this book are poetically simple and perfect for the littlest reader.
What makes this special board-book edition special, however, is the last page shown above, which has been brilliantly (pun intended) fitted with tiny blinking yellow lights, so you can imagine the tiny fireflies flitting about in the dark. Magical!
He truly captures the essence of picture books–joyous simplicity.

I saw this book as a stage show earlier in the year and it was simply magical! Sometimes I think his work is overshadowed by “that” caterpillar…. his back catalogue is SO magnificent!!

Ooh sounds incredible! Haha that caterpillar is ubiquitous indeed and I agree that some of his other books deserve more attention than they get! The Grouchy Ladybug is hilarious 😆
