Mr. Duck enjoys a quiet, structured life in the serene pond where he lives alone, and has a rigid schedule that he follows religiously every morning, right down to the precise time when he would: 1) stretch his wings; 2) fluff his feathers; and 3) glide across the perfectly still water. And that’s just the way he likes it — at least, that’s what he thinks.
But sometimes, a rude shake out of our comfort zones is just what we need to open ourselves up to new experiences. And for Mr. Duck, this happens to be in the form of a cannonballing pig on a particularly hot day!
The simple storyline is probably not unpredictable, but it’s elevated by the well-paced writing that is fun to read aloud. The highlights are most definitely the illustrations of the farm animals, which are some of the most hilariously expressive we’ve ever seen. (The scenes of the farm animals doing water ballet and Mr. Duck flipping out, are priceless!)
Lone rangers and/or crotchety grouches will probably identify with Mr. Duck, and this funny book may help to coax them out of their self-imposed shells. Well, maybe just from 2:00-4:00pm — baby steps.
